The client, Pangea Trust (with support from SIDA, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency), wanted insight on how remittances to Africa from the diaspora community currently are allocated in terms of consumption, investment, and other uses, and an understanding of the community’s potential interest in investing in startups and SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises) in East Africa.

Samawati Capital Partners led a diaspora mapping study that targeted the Kenyan and broader African diaspora with an interest, whether social- or economic-related, in Kenya and the larger East African region. We also aimed our research at the African-Muslim subset of the diaspora community with an eye toward identifying how the tenets of their faith might impact their investment decisions—an important consideration in potentially structuring investments of interest to this large part of the community.

Respondents in the Samawati study were located in 27 countries, with Sweden, Finland, and the US accounting for 54% of total respondents. Insights on diaspora remittances included their nature, frequency, and current and potential uses. In terms of investing, for example, we found that the sectors most commonly invested in by the diaspora community have been real estate (29% of respondents), agriculture (12%), education (9%), and finance (8%)—and that very few of these investments have been directed at non-family-owned businesses.

Samawati also investigated intentionality in the study. For example, the majority of the diaspora community indicated that they would be open to investing in local startups and SMEs in East Africa if they would be provided with accurate, trustworthy, and timely investment information, highlighting an interest in diversifying away from traditional sectors such as real estate.

Based on the findings of the study, Samawati was able to advise our client, Pangea Trust, on how the diaspora community currently allocates capital across various sectors and asset classes, their appetite for investing in SMEs, and the enabling factors that would need to be in place to ensure that direct investment into SMEs increasingly becomes an attractive asset class. Such insights gleaned from any potential group of investors can help inform and guide any entity interested in creating transformative initiatives in Africa.
